Saab MIThril
A wearable computing system for pilots, including a helmet-mounted display system with integrated visual and auditory cues.

Who:

From Saab: Cecilia Lundin, human factors engineer
From the Media Lab: Rich DeVaul, of Prof. Sandy Pentland's Human Design research group

When:

2002

Where:

MIT Media Lab, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, and Saab Aerospace, Sweden

How:

Four collaborators worked for six months to bring the MIThril technology to Saab in Sweden for further development.

Details:

The head-mounted system can help pilots locate targets. Direct voice input controls the system.

Two Saab engineers spent two weeks at the Media Lab to assemble Saab's version of MIThril, giving them an introduction to the Lab's wearable computing initiatives.

Saab MIThril was then demonstrated in Sweden on numerous occasions and Rich DeVaul visited Saab for further exchange of ideas.

The wearable technology became an entirely new area of interest for Saab due to this project.
