| Who:
|
From Samsung: Paul Kim
From the Media Lab: Prof.
John Maeda, head of the Physical Language Workshop group.
|
| When: |
February to September 2004
|
| Where:
|
MIT Media Lab, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, and New York City
|
| Why: |
Samsung wanted to create an online and physical experience that
entertains, but also exposes consumers to Samsung's brand and
products.
|
| How: |
Using Treehouse Studio, Maeda's group and Kim created an interactive
system.
|
Samsung presented their plan to Maeda in February 2004. They licensed
the Treehouse technology for use in retrieving and archiving multimedia
files seamlessly. Recent graduates from the Media Lab worked with Samsung
over the summer of 2004 to integrate the technology into the exhibit.
The online and physical portions of the experience are connected with
the help of the Treehouse Studio technology. People in the physical
space are tracked using RFID tokens, which they can wave over areas
of the exhibit they find interesting. They are sent an email with a
rundown of their activities and a virtual postcard.
The Samsung Experience takes up 10,000 square feet on the third floor
of the Time Warner Center in New York City's Columbus Circle. The exhibit
opened on Sept. 22, 2004. Media Lab graduates Elise Co, Peter Cho, and
Paul Yarin helped with the exhibit.
