Smart Architectural Surfaces
Intelligent and configurable spaces.

Who:

From Information and Communication University: Seongju Chang, Visiting Scientist
From the Media Lab: Prof. Mike Bove and the Object-Based Media group

When:

2003

Where:

MIT Media Lab, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

How:

Using a self-organizing network of cells that make up the surfaces of the room.

Details

The space has diverse sensory, cognitive, and actuation capabilities, which enable it to respond accordingly to the room's occupants, and to events that may occur in the room (temperature changes, lighting changes, etc.)

Sensors in the space include: temperature, humidity, light, pressure, ultrasonic, and infrared.

Each device/sensor in the room checks its own operational status and reports to a controlling/monitoring software agent, which collects and analyzes the data, and reports maintenatnce information to the user (i.e., the air conditioning filter needs to be replaced). This overall agent uses a commonsense database and has the ability to learn from experience.
