Smart Architectural Surfaces
Object-Based Media Group
Smart Architectural Surfaces are a modular framework
for building highly integrated and interactive "smart spaces"
based on a self-organizing network of cells that form the surfaces.
Each cell incorporates networked communications, sensing, intelligence,
and actuation/display. Cells coordinate their operation in order to provide
complex sensing and display applications, and can change from being translucent
to transparent to become ad-hoc windows. We also are exploring kinetic
capabilities such as motion or vibration.
This is a joint project between the MIT Media Laboratory and the Digital
Media Laboratory at the Information
and Communications University (ICU) in Korea.
