Smart City Cars
Smart Cities Group

Researchers: William J. Mitchell
Ryan Chin, Will Lark, and Phil Liang
Group Web site:   http://cities.media.mit.edu/

This project comprises the design and build of a concept car that re-invents the car as a designed object, and redefines the user's relationship to the car and to the city. To encourage and assist intelligently ethical behavior, mobile citizens might be provided with automobiles that are not just dumb transportation devices, but intelligent inhabitants of their cities—wheeled robots that perceive, learn, remember, reason, and provide sophisticated, context-aware assistance and advice.

Such smart city cars could combine networked, embedded intelligence with drive-by-wire driver interfaces, new propulsion systems, intelligent outer skins, and new vehicle architectures. To take the design process "out of the box," the prototype will be designed from a new perspective: that of architecture. This project is in conjunction with TTT sponsor General Motors. The final show car will be presented in 2006.
